We track all the top teams, plays and storylines for Week 3 of college football. Follow each slate for another busy Saturday of the sport.
Night
– Weekly references to the #CollegeKickers missing a crucial place kick are prevalent in college football, but South Florida is optimistic that both its #CollegeSnapper and #CollegeHolder are potential breakthroughs for Florida. We can mourn the cost of such an upset. Having easily tied field goal range in the final minute, the Bulls were sent 20 yards back on a low shotgun snap, making Holders fail the job of setting up kicker Spencer Schrader. Somehow he was still nearing completion.
-The Anthony Richardson-centric offense in Florida continues to struggle terribly. We had a brutal second half. Richardson threw an interception in the end zone to help USF maintain a 28-24 lead. The Bulls scored the final 18 points of the game as Florida fumbled. .
– Missouri State has a 7-point lead, with the ball going into the 4th quarter over Arkansas Territory. Spin your Harley, Bobby Petrino. As many bad losses the Razorbacks have experienced in recent years, this one would be the worst of them all.
– In Tennessee vs. Akron… (Callaway was sent off).
– A botched punt suddenly turned the game around in Baton Rouge. LSU was punted by the Bulldogs, six behind Mississippi State, but fumbled, and the Tigers recovered inside the MSU 10-yard line. They scored quickly to take a 17–16 lead and tackled two more touchdown drives while the Bulldogs’ defense stalled. Brian Kelly is nearing his first significant win at LSU.
– Marshall plummeted from penthouse to outhouse, going from a stunning win at Notre Dame last week to a previously winless overtime loss at Bowling Green this week. The Thundering Herd was out of juice after jumping to his 21-7 lead, as if his emotional reserves had dried up after spending so much in South Bend. It’s back to reality for the herd now, and Notre Dame should be even more upset about how the game went down on September 10th.
– Washington threatens to drive Michigan to Puget Sound. The Huskies lead the Spartans 16–0 and have a 197–16 advantage in total yards. His Indiana-bound QB Michael Pennix Jr. and his receiver are explosive, with Washington’s defense dominating his line of scrimmage. Last year, the Huskies had good players but poor coaching and a mess. They are in much better shape now and appear capable of competing with Oregon for hegemony in the Pacific Northwest.
- Boone, home to Appalachia, had multiple patient incidents following the victory. Fans flooded the field and multiple injuries were reported.
noon
- Congratulations to the state of Oregon for previously winning Bounceback Team of the Year. The Ducks, whose 49-3 loss to Georgia in the season opener, now looks more like a commentary on Bulldog prowess than a warning sign about Oregon. Since then, rookie head coach Dan Lanning has won two games with a 111-34 total. Auburn-transferred quarterback Bo his Knicks struggled four straight times against Georgia, but has sharpened since then. He passed for 222 yards and ran for 35 yards for a total of five touchdowns.
Chase Bryce’s Hail Mary pass didn’t make it to the end zone, but it went to receiver Christian Horn. Horn circled a cluster of right-hand players to score the winner against Troy on the final play. (Troy contributed to his own demise by taking a deliberate safety and having to kick from the 20-yard line, squibbing the kick. ) App Last Week: Shock Texas A&M, host of ESPN college game day.
- Current score, including oppressed Colorado: Minnesota 49, Colorado 7 (4th quarter). Washington 28, Colorado 0 (halftime). And the best team in the state, the Air Force, was upset Friday night by Wyoming.
- Marcus Freeman had to endure 1 … 2 … 3 … 4 chips on a Hail Mary pass by Cal on the last play before earning his first win as head coach. Notre Dame he won 24-17, but not before the final Golden he gave the Bears one last chance to tie or possibly win. An outright targeting foul by linebacker JD Bertrand kept Cal’s final drive alive, and a fumble by Fighting Irish on his return his touchdown was (correctly) flipped over. This gave the Bears the finishing blow into the end his zone, and at least two of his cals had the ball in his hands before it fell to the turf. Notre Dame playing a backup quarterback isn’t good, but at least it’s not unwinnable.
- This gave Marcus Freeman his first win as Notre Dame head coach.
- South Alabama finally missed out on an upset win at UCLA, partly due to the following crimes against football.
- Penn State QB Sean Clifford’s first half at Auburn: 117 passing yards, 14 yards, a touchdown rush (and surviving a big hit in the scramble), and what about this 25-yard reception?
- BYU has missed three of its last four field goals, all within 40 yards.
That included two mistakes against Baylor last week, which helped extend that game into multiple overtime periods.
- You might look at this pick and think it’s a bad play for Auburn, and it certainly is, but adding insult to injury is the fact that the play probably shouldn’t have happened at all.Croc hit triple his zero before the snap, but replay he didn’t notice it neither Booth nor the Tigers
noon
- OK, Purdue hit that go-ahead TD and proceeded to commit Seven Penalties, six of which were accepted. This allowed Syracuse to march for a short game-winning drive and set up their own chip shot his kickoff. An unhinged finish gave hometown Orange an incredibly electric victory after his score of 9–3 at halftime.
Good news for Purdue. Late in the game at Syracuse, they had a go-ahead touchdown. The bad news: they had him penalized 30 yards, and an interesting kickoff was set up after that. As Syracuse drove for the win, the Boilermakers committed another penalty to extend the drive.
- Aidan O’Connell doesn’t let the picks hold him back. He comes back first in this depth.
- Oh my god, I don’t like this. Thicc 6, Cuse goes up by 10.
- Northern Illinois outperformed the Northwest by 31-17 in the second half of sales, which isn’t great for the Wildcats.
- Got a good one in Syracuse. The Boilermakers were “no tackles, just vibes”. This allowed Orange to score on an unsuccessful play and add a 2-point conversion to move up to 3 late at Purdue. Syracuse has struggled to score touchdowns every game and has already added two in the second half.
- If you want to hop on a plane and head to the Rose Bowl, there are plenty of good seats!
- If you’re looking for an upset in this slate, there was a late Northwestern fumble. The Wildcats were in a close game against Southern Illinois and, despite a decent drive, threw the ball to a spoiler-minded opponent with about eight minutes remaining.
- Don’t make your meeting partner look like UConn
- It didn’t take long for Annnnnd Gamecocks fans to decide this was over:
- Here’s another one from Bowers… wow:
- Some Nebraska fans seem to have an opinion on the coaching staff’s future
- block. Bowers. The Doges lead with his 21-0.
- South Carolina’s Kai Kruger played quarterback in high school, so it’s no surprise that as a punter he can take such a safeguard against fakes. was a great play, but the Georgia defense still kept it out of the end zone.
- Georgia’s defense is good enough to give them the gift of a turnover like this, but South Carolina’s Spencer Ratler undershot this wheel route and used the ensuing drive to take over and give the Dawgs 14 points. got the lead of
- Keep the QB draw going!Dillon Gabriel of Oklahoma takes this 61 yards home
- Lo and behold, perhaps the most adventurous fair-catch decisions seen all season long.
noon
BYU vs Oregon (-3.5) at 3:30pm
As mentioned earlier, Oregon was punctured in week 1 by a very physical Georgia team. Solid his Cougars team would be a great start.
Pennsylvania vs. Auburn, 3:30 p.m.
The Nittany Lions head off for a close rematch of last year’s Happy Valley. Both of these teams boast talented defensive and quarterback situations. Auburn is still tinkering with how to place its two quarterbacks (sometimes doing so at the same time) and had trouble dispatching San Jose State at home last week. Penn State’s Sean Clifford is an established starter and knows what he’s got with him. The Nittany Lions think it’s fine for now, but Drew Allar is ahead of him as a talented freshman.
Night
Fresno State vs. USC (-12), 10:30 p.m.
USC is set to score a ton of points…that’s all but guaranteed given what they’ve shown in the first two weeks. The problem is that they give up a ton of points to someone who doesn’t seem to pass the ball at will. USC has 8 points (2 fumble recoveries and 6 interceptions) this season, and multiple defensive players also scored him in Week 1. Ultimately, that success won’t last…and if it stops this week, Fresno State’s Jake Hayner is poised to take advantage. .
