Elm Edwards, Arizona State Football agree to part ways

The Arizona State Sun Devils have parted ways with head coach Herm Edwards after a poor start to the 2022 season, the school announced Sunday.

The move comes amid an NCAA investigation into the football program over allegations of recruitment violations.

After the team finished the 2021 regular season by beating rivals the Arizona Wildcats in December, Edwards was given the green light to return, but at home after ASU’s 1-2 start to the year. The pressure mounted, including a 30-21 loss to Eastern Michigan.

University Athletics Vice Chancellor Ray Anderson said in a statement, “We have decided to change the leadership of our football program, which will take effect immediately.” I have made the decision to relinquish my duties as our head coach. At its core, I do what is best for my current team, staff and university.I understand the frustration there. We have to do better, and that starts with today’s decision.”

Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro Confirmed Running back coach Sean Aguano will serve as interim head coach.

ASU quarterback Emory Jones said the team didn’t pay attention to detail all week.

The Sun Devils have never lost at home to a non-Power 5 conference opponent since 2008.

Notably, the Sun Devils lost both coordinators to investigation-related resignations during the offseason, the team put together its worst recruiting class on record, starting quarterback Jayden Daniels, and announced a four-season return at ASU. Edwards went 26-20 (17-14 in Pac-12 play) over four years at ASU, replacing former head coach Todd Graham, who was fired in 2017. Edwards also went 1-2 in three bowl games.

June 16th, athletic Doug Haller first reported team misconduct during the 2020 COVID-19 Dead period.

Haller reported that it was unclear how much Edwards was involved in the investigation, and he relied heavily on former associate head coach and defensive coordinator Antonio Pierce for his recruiting efforts.

Pete Tamel, former Yahoo! Sports, reported in detail that it was Pierce who pushed the boundaries of allowing recruits to visit the campus of Arizona State University during the Dead period.

Thamel reported that an anonymous person sent the school’s physical education department “dozens of pages” of evidence about recruitment practices.

Pearce resigned from the program on National Signing Day (February 3) as the Sun Devils’ 2022 recruiting class ranked 105th nationally, according to 247 Sports. In 1999 he had never been lower than 65th place since 247 Sports’ job ranking database was launched.

In early 2022, ASU fired former ASU wide receiver coach Prentice Gill and secondary coach Chris Hawkins, and tight end coach Adam Brenneman resigned. The trio were on hiatus for the entire 2021 season under investigation.

Offensive coordinator Zach Hill also resigned in January, citing his apparent involvement in Recruit’s misconduct.

ASU has hired former UNLV offensive coordinator Glenn Thomas to replace Hill and promoted former interim defensive back coach Donny Henderson to defensive coordinator. The show also announced the promotion of Juston Wood to tight end coach and Bobby Wade to wide receiver coach. Missouri’s Aaron Fletcher was named the team’s new defensive backs coach a week earlier this month.

Edwards, who spoke about turning ASU into a pro-style approach, would resign as a controversial Anderson hire. A former NFL head coach and longtime ESPN analyst, he never directed a college program and has not coached since being fired as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008. I did.

His only collegiate coaching experience was as a defensive backs coach at San Jose State University from 1987-89.
