Madonna recently carried the most famous (and most photographed) rectangular radio-shaped trunk at the BFA show in Central Saint Martins. She is one of those artists who exist seamlessly at the intersection of fashion and music. To bring to mind other very recent examples, consider Frank Ocean, Rihanna, and her partner A$AP Rocky. In fact, the latter is a collaborator with the label that made Madonna’s Trunks, Midnight Studios by Shane Gonzales, which debuted at New York Fashion Week last week.
Gonzalez is a Los Angeles-based creative actually He is multi-hyphenated because he works as a designer, artist, DJ and artistic director. He’s a Latino born and raised in Southern California, and deeply involved in his hometown’s music and skateboard scene, so his design sensibilities are based on countless lived experiences and characters. He first launched his Midnight Studios in 2014 at the age of 19, but after taking time off to work on other projects, in February he announced the label at a show in LA. Gonzalez says the label is rooted in music and youth culture, finding its own style at the intersection of rock’n’roll and street style. “New York Fashion Week has been a long time coming for me. I wanted to do my first show many years ago, but it required a lot of work and restructuring involving the brand,” he said at Midnight. He added that he’s been in the “mixtape or demo” stage since starting Studios. The show is meant to be a “debut album”.
