SACRAMENTO — Tony Salmond, Superintendent of Public Education, today congratulated the 29 California schools selected as 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools. This prestigious award recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools that close the performance and opportunity gaps and achieve high academic standards for their students.

“Congratulations to the students, educators, families and educators who make up these outstanding, vibrant and positive school communities,” said Thurmond. “As we continue to recover from the pandemic, this award is testament to the hard work of educators across the state on behalf of our students. Their commitment to meeting needs has helped transform the lives of students under extraordinary circumstances.”

Schools are recognized based on the school’s overall academic performance or progress toward closing performance gaps between subgroups of students. These are among the best performing schools in the state based on overall student performance, subgroup student performance, and graduation rates.

This award recognizes the efforts of educators, families and communities to create safe and welcoming schools where students can learn challenging and engaging content. In its 39th cohort, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program awarded nearly 10,000 awards to over 9,000 schools.

Public schools are nominated by each state’s chief education official, the Department of Defense Education Service, and the Indian Department of Education. Private schools are nominated by the American Council on Private Education.
